The demands include the banning of school trips, swimming lesson and various other activities that the pupils usually enjoy.
As there may be a few Muslim children in a public school, should the rules be changed to accomodate them?

Or should they have to fit in with the rules and lessons that have been taught and enjoyed by many for years?

For more detailed info google: Muslim Council of Britain Lists Demands of Public Schools

and or

Faith in the system should muslims be allowed their own assemblies?

This is THREE YEARS old...

BBC

Many of the things - wearing headscarves for example - have been allowed for many years in a lot of schools.

As for allowing girls to wear trousers in school/PE - that is a fight me and my Mum had with a school when I was younger (and again when I was in secondary school - as the rules then stated 'for religious reasons only') But we won easily enough.

Actually, most of the things I agree with - and fought for - for ALL children. Such as the above, and separate changing rooms.

Scheduling swimming lessons/exams around Ramadan shouldn't be too much of a problem, as it usually falls around August/September - so the very beginning of the school year.

As maybe from the previous thread you do not seem to realise how much a school has to change the building, and do a hundred and one things to accomodate a minority of pupils, you may wish to read up on: Meeting The Needs of Muslim pupils.

This may give you a better understanding.

This isnt as simple as just being allowed to wear trousers or not.

Parents evenings/vacinations must be rescheduled
Halal food must be served
If fasting packed lunches must be made by the school for pupils to take home
The staff have to be trained in Halal food
No detentions during the month of Ramadam
Swimming and PE lessons can be a problem
Girls cant swim with boys
Toilets must be ajusted
washrooms provided

The lists and demands go on and on and on.

Who has to pay for all this too?

For the record i think you have your wires crossed as i didnt give any info on YOUR BBC link.

Considering you didn't provide a link, you just said Google...the first thing that comes up is an article published Feb 22, 2007.

Is this closer to what you meant?
Demands for State Funded Muslim Only Schools in Britain

And as far as this part is concerned...

Did you mean vacations or vaccinations?

To be fair, if students are fasting it makes sense that they shouldn't do certain things - simply for health reasons. Christian's also fast, and many other religions. Being aware of a child's diet is something that teachers SHOULD be doing.

As for toilets/'washrooms' - they should be separate anyway?

Also, you assume the 'minority' of students. I know quite a few schools where Muslim Students make up the Majority. Though that is besides the point - because they are minority they don't matter?

The BBC link is the only known source I could see on this

There are over 60 million people in this country and less than 2 million muslim school pupils.

They are a minority.

Because they are a minority its not that they dont matter, but the majority would suffer if all the demands of the Muslim Council were to be put into practice.

Also as there are numerous other religions who may not make as many demands...is the money fairly shared?

Extra supervision has to be provided too twice a day, every day so as they can pray in school.

Washing facilities must be installed to wash themselves in the toilets and seperate facilities for washing feet before prayers.

They are allowed to wear religious jewellery but other pupils are not allowed to wear jewellery.

They can misbehave and parents can say they cannot do detension as its Ramadam

Equality?

Im not sure....

Yes you got the right link!

Okay, but I took that to mean that they wanted private schools. Like how we (in the States) have Catholic Schools, Seventh Day Adventist Schools, etc.

No they set out demands for the existing public schools to change to accomodate them!

Overall, but in certain schools they are the majority.

Anyway, I have actually flicked through the document
Needs of Muslim Students

And most of the stuff set out I don't see a problem with, in fact a lot of it was already in place at my Secondary school. And a lot of it is simply being AWARE of what the religion does and doesn't allow.

And the 'rules' regarding Ramadan are simply common sense. You cannot expect someone who is fasting to work to their best ability during an exam (though Ramadan and compulsory exams - like SAT's and GSCE's don't occur at the same time.) or high energy sports.

I'm sorry. You are mistaken. They want their own schools with Muslim teachers and Muslim students. They just want them to be state funded.

Yeah, the group in the op is The Muslim Council of Britain, in yours it quotes The London School of Islamics

I just though I should point that out, I dunno the difference between the two, but their aims seem quite different to me.
