This film is a character study film. And J Edgar Hoover, the founder of the FBI, was a very unique character indeed, so it was natural that a biopic be done about the person. A seemingly daunting task, the very talented Leonardo DeCaprio probably gives his finest acting performance yet, which, of course, is saying a lot, already with 3 Oscar nominations under his belt. From the body transformation, down to the vocal style, one can tell how much sincere effort was put into this performance, certainly worthy of an Oscar, which would be his first, and definitely certain to win an another nomination this winter.
It is what drives the film, really, as the plot itself, a trap that many biopics of this nature seem to fall into, including Leonardo’s previous “Aviator”, is long and almost pointless at times. However, JEdgar was not a normal man, one who adored professionalism and dedication in his, or any line of, work during the often mono-toned 40’s and 50’s America, and carried this over into a purposely unfulfilled personal life, always speaking with polished clarity even when in social situations. And, due to the fine performance of DeCaprio, we remain captivated throughout and up to the end of this four star film.
