I live in Melbourne and with the "dryer" seasons coming there's alot of talk about water shortages, drought etc etc.

The thing about Melbourne that I don't understand is the Victorian Government. All the politicians rant and rave about the water crisis but are more that willing to dump thousands of litres of our prescious substance into the Yarra, not to clean it essentially but to filter it for the fishes. Yes, you read correctly, the fishes.

Another thing the Government doesn't seem to grasp, is the increasing metropolitian population. The reason we are hearing about water shortages is because there are too many people to supply water too, and these people are using it carelessly, yet the Victorian Government wants to increase the populas by one million.

I think the Victorian Government needs to get it's priorities straight. If there was only a few thousand litres of water left in a dam, what would be considered more important A) the fishes or B) melbournians?
And if Melbourne is already struggling to provide water to it's residents, why encourage further growth?

We're on level 4 water restrictions up here (Central Coast NSW) meaning that we can't use a hose - ever! The dam is around 20% capacity with no decent rainfall predicted in the near future.

Water is going to be Australia's biggest problem in years to come. We should stop spending so much on sending our teenagers to fight American wars and spend more on looking after our own country.

Correction, Australian's aren't going over seas to "fight" American wars, we are there purely to keep the peace.

Secondly, Australia needs it's defence, so to take all money and resources out of the military and putting it into some thing else like water, might sound great but is actually suicidal. Because then we don't have trained soldiers, who know how to protect this country in the event of an attack.
Water is a thing we don't have a lot of, but we can all do our bit to help the situation. Flushing thousands of litre's down the Yarra for the fishes and increasing the population is not going to help, and the Victorian Government should be smart enough to figure that out.

Even if Australia acted in the manner you suggest, I strongly doubt they'ed spend the money on water....

Peace keepers is just a nice word the government uses to try and convince the dumb public they are not at war, they are sent to be prepared to shoot and be shot.

Except in Afganistan, where Aussie troops are on offensive missions, and this wasn't held from the public. In Iraq Aussie soldiers are just there to keep the peace.

Of course if their fired upon or threatened in anyway, just as they are trained to do, they shoot to kill. But then again, if you were in a war zone, and someone looked pretty dodgy or threatened you're wellbeing in some way, even if you weren't entirely sure what was going to happen but you had to make a judgement call, tell me you wouldn't act in the same way? Kill might sound harsh but out there it's kill or be killed, what would you prefer?
Just like a police officer or a security guard, they are there to keep the peace and make sure everyone is ok, but sometimes things get out of hand and judgement calls have to be made, same deal.

Also the public aren't really that dumb. Nine out of ten people would know a war is going on somewhere around the globe, where Aussie troops are involved. Unless they've been living under a rock for the past few years.
Maybe the media blows the situation up to seem more than it actually is, or vice versa, but people shouldn't believe everything they read or hear...it's also common knowledge the media enjoy overreacting.

And yes beng a soldier means that you risk getting shot, but no one held a gun to these peoples heads and said you must be a soldier or else....these people entered they're careers with the knowledge that one day they might be sent overseas to face war.

And what has this got to do with the Victorian Government wasting water anyways??

Water restrictions... I've had numerous storms, persistant hail and even snow during the last week. Maybe catchments should be built where it actually rains? Just a thought

the only reason why we are suffering in Melbourne at the moment it because the population is too high.

there is no less water around than any other time, it's just that with the increasing population and the dryish weather we've had things have been made a little tough.

but if you're complaining now, about the water crisis, what are you going to say in about ten years...because Bracks wants to increase the Melbourne area by at least one million over that time frame?

its the same problem in the south east of england it's too over populated and the amount of water that falls down here isnt large enough to supply all the people so we get put on hosepipe bans from february
