Streets of Rage was released for the Sega Genesis in late
1991. Many people wondered if this game could achieve the
same success as Final Fight. Thankfully it did, and a new
classic series began.
Graphics-7/10- The characters are of average heeght, and
contain sub-par, but are animated excellently. One excellent
point in the graphics is this, the backgrounds are diverse
and are very well designed and animated, for example, the
flyers blow in the wind in the rundown city area and the
moving waves on the beach area, it's small graphicl touches
like that that make good graphics, great. Overall, they are
good, and excellent for their time.
Sound-10/10- If any series showed what the Genesis could do
sound-wise, other than the Sonic games, this was it, this
series would known for its excellent music, and this game
started the tradition. The music is excellent, very clear
and fits each level perfectly. The sound effects are great,
each is crystal clear.
Story-3/10- It's basically the same story that was used in
Final Fight, minus the kidnapping , an evil psycho comes to
a town and terrorizes it, the good guys try to stop him.
Gameplay-6/10- The game has 3 characters to choose from,
each with their own unique characteristics. It doesn't
really matter who you choose, it's just a matter of personal
preference.
Control-8/10- The control is great, It's not as good as the
later games in the series, but It's still good, most moves
can be pulled off without a second thought, but the grapples
are a pain to execute.
Replay Value-5/10- This game has a very limited replay
value, the only thing to do is beat the game with all the
characters or try to improve your score.
Presentation-7/10- Basic, but the presentation of this game
follows the beauty of simplicity, nothing fancy, just enough
to get the job done.
Overall-8/10- It's the on of the best side-scrolling
beat-em-ups out there, it started the seires and set the
standard of excellence by which all others were judged.
Rent or Buy?-Buy- The game is excellent and should be cheap,
and easy to find, It's an excellent game and a must-buy for
fans of the genre.
For Nomad Owners- This game is perfect for the Nomad, the
blurring is minor, the sound is crystal clear, and the
control is still perfect. Overall, a great game for Nomad
owners and Genesis owners in general.
