i've been trying to understand max webers general perspective, but i'm finding it really hard to grasp. can someone break it down for me please..? once i have a basic understanding i'll be able to develop it with extra reading. at the minute the more i seem to read the more confused i am. maybe i'm just really missing the point

You might find Contested Knowledge: Social Theory in the Postmodern Era by Steven Seidman to be helpful. I don't have any particular in depth knowledge of Sociology, my interest lies more in cultural/social anthropology, but I found the descriptions in this work to be quite clear and concise.

I just began covering Max Weber in my sociology course this semester.

He dealt more with political sociology, or the problems of power and distribution of power.

An important question he answered: Why do some people govern over others?

He answered this by saying it was power, which he defined as the ability of some people to impose their will on others, even against resistance. The difference in these powers he described as legitimate power, which was approved by the people or given by consent. The other was illegitimate power which was the use of force not approved by law, like robbery (give me your money).

More to come! We meet twice a week.
