I get a sort of "News Briefing" every day from the New York Times. I'm sure why. I don't pay for it. I think one of my Commie cousins buys it for me.

The times calls our occupation of Afghanistan "our longest war."

Didn't World War II officially end in something like 1990?

Did the Korean War end yet?

And that dust up with the Dey of Algiers, was that one war or three?

No. You’re thinking of the “Cold War”, which wasn’t a real war.

In terms if an official agreement, no.
In terms of military operations, yes , 1953.

Of course Vietnam was never “officially” a war.

After Germany surrendered "There was, ..., no peace treaty between "Germany" and the four other powers. This changed in the fall of 1990, when the two Germanys and the four powers settled terms and signed the ... "Two-Plus Four" Treaty ... which was the final peace agreement of World War II.

https://chnm.gmu.edu/1989/items/show/290

So World War Two lasted at least 50 years. If it started in 1914, then it lasted 76 years.

Just because the final treaty, with the reunification of Germany, was outstanding, does not mean World War 2 was on going.

But if you want to believe that nonsense feel free to go aground making a fool of yourself.

History books here in California, often have two dates for the end of a war.

In the modern view the Revoutionary War stopped in 1781, but people at the time, like Washington, didn't believe that the British had had enough. And the text books add that the war ended with the treaty in 1783. Same goes for the War of 1812 and the Seven Years War.

With that in mind, saying that the Pacific War ended with a treaty in 1955. (If I remember right), and the War in Europe ended in 1990 seems like the normal way to say it.

I don’t know what history books you had in school here, but it was always 1945 from what I read. My dad even had newspaper headlines clipped from the dates in 1945, declaring the war to be over.

Other people fought afterwards, but not by Germans or in Germany, and not ever by the Japanese - they don’t even have a military anymore.

I have never seen the 1990 date in a text book. My mother told me that she saw it on televison news.

About the last combatant of WW2?

During the Vietnam War the Air Force used B-52s stationed on Guam. To help them get to Vietnam and back, the Air Force installed navigation radios on Lubang Island in the Philippines. My grandfather was involved somehow in that. The filipinos told him to watch for Japanese soldiers who were still on the island. Ten years later the last soldier, Hiro Onoda, surrendered. He wrote a book. No Surrender: My Thirty Years War.

Either that or he was intentionally marching the French army to it's doom with no coats.

Oh... I thought you were talking about U.S. wars.

Longest war... maybe the Hundred Years' War 116 years.... or a better choice might be Anglo-French Wars 748 years or the Reconquista 781 years... or maybe the entire period of Roman Empire expansion....

But was he really a "combatant" for those post WW2 years? Or was he a soldier living/surviving in a jungle, but not actually engaged in combat?

Or maybe he was one of those guys that thought it never ended because his chain of command stopped communicating orders to him and nobody was there to deliver the news. I’ve heard stories like that, don’t remember if they were fictional or not.
