Check these out:

Microsoft Pre-release Software Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" Beta 1 Team Suite (Virtual
PC version)
Link:
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=36B6609E-6F3D-40F4-8C7D-AD111679D8DC&displaylang=en#Instructions

It has new controls and a new framework (.NET Framework 3.5)
The even more interesting fact is that the next-to-next version of Visual Studio has also
been announced. Currently codenamed "Rosario", this will be the version of VS following
the "Orcas" release. Parallel development on this has also started.

And finally, a new product/tool, currently only known as "Springfield", is also in the
works that will allow non-professionals to be able to create applications without needing
to code. This would be an interesting tool to keep an eye out for - for both practical
application creation as well as a intial learning tool.

Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista

3D "Cubed" Virtual Desktop Manager for Windows

Linux has had a fairly cool virtual desktop manager in Compiz. This allows users to place
applications on 4 faces of a 3D cube and rotate the cube around to view the applications.
And this has always been touted as a better option than the Flip3D of Windows Vista.

However, there is now a small, free tool that imitates the same functionality on Windows
XP and Vista. Link: https://chsalmon.club.fr/index.php?en/Yod-m-3d-about

Don't forget Inkscape as a free alternative to Adobe Illustrator.

Also, it's worth noting that most of the software on the list is "free" as in "free beer!" rather than "free" as in "Freedom"
See the Open Source Initiatve for details on truly Free software.
