Life has no purpose.

This is a discussion from another forum I go to but I thought I'd see what people thought of it here.

Human arrogance often leads people to assume such silly notions as 'meaning' or 'purpose' to our existence.

Purpose is the ultimate goal of an action intentionally undertaken.

Life is not an action that was intentionally undertaken, life does not have an ultimate goal, hence there is no purpose to life.

Discuss.

I think we give a purpose - matter just doesnt do this sort of thing on its own.

Nobody intentionally has sex to create life?

Isn't that a reason rather than a purpose?

Universal purpose? I absolutely agree. We mean nothing and our species will be forgotten as easily as whatever the hell species roamed the earth before dinosaurs.

Individual purpose? I disagree. To other members of our own species, life has a great purpose. Every single life has an effect on one next to it, every life slightly changes something around them. Every single life alters the web of our species; as corny as it sounds, it's true.

Just because it won't mean anything in the grand scheme of eternity doesn't make it meaningless. After all, if humans are the ones defining the purpose of a human, it should be given great significance, even if another species or god wouldn't see it the same way.

I dont think there is a general purpose to life other than to recreate..But each individual controls there own life and to me its up to the individual on what there purpose in life is..Weather its Helping people, researching, sports star it up to you. Thats how i see it at least

As we all appear to be learning, I would say enlightenment was as close to a purpose as I can think of right now...

As a christian part of the meaning of life is to win as many souls to god as possible so that when they face the judgement seat of christ they will be able to spend eternity in heaven.
Another part is to not waste time because life is short

We each give life purpose. Society used to ensure that we met certain goals and those were our purpose. Things liek babies, marriage, a house etc. Now people are living for themselves. Sometimes this is good and sometimes not so good. Long are the days when you had to have a goal of getting married, having kids etc.

I think when we have have goals and set out to achieve them we are serving a purpose.

I would hate to think otherwise.
