For actual book diaries I would never read someone else's without permission.

For online journals, if it's a public journal, I might skim it. If it's a friend, I usually read it if I notice it.

I usually make mine public and then change it to friends only a few days later. I tend to not use it as a personal journal because I have other ones online I do that with.

Thank you all for the input. I have a dull life of work, cooking, listening to music and my forums. Just thinking of starting mine someday.

If journals are posted, the poster wants people to read them obviously...what the setting in on, (friends, public, private) determines wheter or not it's an invitation for anyone to post or not.

..also, nobody can whine about the content of the post, as it's the posters own personal space, and therefore, free to post what they like...all within TOS of course.

They're call journals; anything goes. I wasn't sure where to put something very long, so I put it in journals. Not everything is personal. Sometimes people just want to share some funny things or a family story that had no where else to go. Why would unyone criticize this unless they don't want to bother to share? I'd rather do this that write nice picture, or nice poem on things. That takes no thought.

I think of them as blogs too.

I used to use my "journal" on here as my blog - when I first joined, but I stopped for various reasons. I still have a blog I post all my stupidity on, but it's hosted on it's own server and website

They're not personal though, if they were, people wouldn't post them where anyone can read them.
If they wanted a personal diary, that can be done on their own pc and not posted on the net.

Thanks for all the input, I now see the journals in a new light. I will read in many, wait till I know the others a little better. Still up in the air if I will do one, maybe someday.

@x_Laura_x Said

I just write any old random crap in mine - Sometimes I do things and they might not matter to anyone else but I feel compelled to write them down somewhere, and where else is better than my journal?

I don't put anything too personal in there, I don't like the thought of that being out there on the internet. My journal is pretty much for fun purposes and the occaisional rant about something or other. Sometimes it's just an update on how I'm feeling

I like to read my friends' journals to see what they're upto but like Treebee I don't always leave a comment.

Well that is my POV, too! I'll bet most of us who journal DON'T put anything intensely personal in it. Just a smidge
