I was once told that when making ice cubes in the freezer, lukewarm water freezes faster than room temperature water. Is this a myth or is there any substance to it?

It's true. Something with the molecules

I guess warm molecules become lazy and freeze faster.Love Doctor you seem to have dropped a cube down your front.

Temperature is a kind of measure of the kinetic energy of the molecules. They lose that energy to the surrounding enviroment, which is why your freezer can freeze things. The warmer water is, the more energy it needs to lose, so it takes a bit longer

so what happens when to water hits room temp while its in the freezer? is it still freezing faster than water that was put in there at luke warm temp? im smelling myth here.

i found a website that mentions the Mpemba effect. the site says that it is based on evaporation.

Did my chem teacher lie to us? I know he said lukewarm water freezes faster. I could never figure out why which is the reason I remember it

Yeah but when warm water hits room temperature in the freezer it would be losing energy faster than if it was put in at room temperature. That's how it was explained to me

this explains it.

Though it's a bit like breaking even that way the water would have to get to the point where the energy as the same as room temperature anyhow how warm is your room?
Unless the cube was in a moebius loop and would remain warm anyway.

I always use hot tap water, the cubes become clearer and I think harder and without air bubbles, But I could not give you a scientific explanation for why this is so!
I do not know about time, I have never compared freezing times!

What does it matter u put water in an ice tray and stick it in the freezer it freezes and turns to ice eventually what does it matter how long it takes

Nice attitude, maybe Isaac Newton should've just said that about the apple falling from the tree. "It falls eventually, doesn't really matter why"

I personally like to learn why stuff happens and how things work

I am so confused, however, in the interest of science I will try it - I am having a few friends round tonight so I'm sure we'll need to top up the ice at some point.
