No. I do not agree with that statement.

Would "the populace" or some portion of the "populace" wonder what happened? Yes.

Would it create a political backlash? Historically speaking > No.

Do you really want me to list all the socio-political leaders who have been assassinated over the years that have not had any long term impact?

Yes... there were the Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Gandi... but there were also many that were/are lost in the flow of history.... do your remember James A. Garfield or William McKinley? How about Anwar Sadat? The list goes on and on... do you feel the impact of any of those assassinated heads of state? Really? Now take it down to just so called VIP's that were not heads of state...

Do you feel the impact of the assassination of Augusto César Sandino? Really... you do? I do, but do you?

Now... does the average citizen feel that impact?

A backlash doesn't necessarily mean revolt or popular uprising, it could spawn conspiracy theories and the like. It would also cause the regime embarrassment on the world political stage. There are protests going on in Iran right now because of the downing of the plane;

A hunting trip with d*** Cheney maybe? It would depend on whether those involved in the protest movement knew there was one of their own on board. Again remember, I don't know the answer. When this started I theorized the Iranian government may have brought down the plane somehow. That suspicion turned out to be true. It doesn't mean I was correct about the whole thing, I simply stated what could be a reason for them doing so.

You're right, we probably wont. The New York Times article disputes the officials statement of "flying posture and altitude of an enemy target" because the plane was on a northbound ascent from the airport. In other words going up and away. Most of what you will hear from Iran will be damage control, including the arrest of those "involved."
