Method for treating meat products with carbon monoxide. https://www.patentstorm.us/patents/7094435.html

Your Eyes May Not Know Whether Meat Is Fresh

OMAHA, Neb. -- Your eyes alone cannot tell you if the meat you're buying is fresh, experts said, because many supermarket chains treat meat with a harmless level of carbon monoxide to keep it looking fresh.

Shopper Ken Jenkins said he lets his eyes lead during grilling season when he?s in the supermarket buying beef.

"I just look for maybe the redness and the leanness and less fat," Jenkins said.

It makes the meat look more appealing, but has no other effect.

Well.. you don't.

If you don't like the practice, patronize meat producers who don't do it.

The problem with that is that I live up north one grocery store and a meat manager that yells at custermers.

Meat packaged the same day should not stink, Meat guy said it was packaged a few hours earlier? he can't smell?
So I googled yesterday about heath risks and found out the possible reason that it looked ok in the store but stunk when I oppened it at home to seperated my bulk meat pkgs and freeze it.

as far as i know quality control of meat is very strict, I've never heard of someone being tricked into buying spoiled meat in this way,
it just makes it look more appetizing, when exposed to air meat can turn a browny kind of colour, but its still good to eat.

it'd be a bigger crime to throw it away i think, wasteful

I understand about air making meats look browish,But to open a package a builk one at that and the smell as bad as the ones I bought.
And the meat looked good well thats when it gets to be a healt concern.
