I've googled it... nothing.
Asked a friend.... nothing.

My chemistry homework asks

'Why does Petrol contain benzene'
'Why is benzene free petrol more expensive'

I found the answer to the first but i can't seem to find out the answer to the second one. Don't suppose anyone can help please?

Benzene is a natural constituent of crude oil and probably costs money to remove it from the crude oil during it's process into petrol.

1) if benzene is naturally found in Petrol, I would assume it's because of the processing required in order to remove the benzene,

2) if benzene is not found in Petrol naturally, my assumption would be that benzene performs some function that must be replaced by another, more expensive, chemical.

It takes alot of effort to take it out.

Some great lakes have a high quantity of gold in the water, but it would cost MANY times more to extract it, than that water itself would cost.

Benzene is carcinogenic isn't it?
Anyway, i think it's made part of it during the reforming process since aromatics have a higher octane than long straight chain hydrocarbons.

Yup. Benzene has been linked to cancer and Alzheimers. Before these links came to light, chemists used to use it to clean lab benches because it's a good solvent. It's present in the crude and it costs a bit to remove it. Petrol is really just your friendly straight-chain hydrocarbons with some other organics mixed in.
