One of my pet peeves, too! I know in my case it stems from being disappointed by my father as a child. He was a raging alcoholic, and used to promise us the world, and seldom deliver. I still have difficulty accepting a promise at face value, even though I know not all people are like that. I believe that is part of what made me such an independant person today, I seldom count on others for assistance.
