Depends on the price i suppose

but look into

Ibanez

Dean

ESP

probably even gibson

for metal you really need a guitar with humbuckers because they work well with heavey distortion that is the norm with metal

do some reaserch, find out what instruments your fav metal bands use, and then look into the company that makes them,

and go into a shop and test some out

and with guitars allways try before you buy

the only band i have ever seen with a fender was entombed's guitarist in one film clip with a white telecaster. (fenders suck for extreme metal dude)

I would suggest:

jackson king V

Ibanez RG or GIO series

BC Rich Bich, beast or mockingbird

ESP LTD models

Dean Guitars Razorbacks

Or you could go with the old gibson but i don't like them very much, they have fat necks.

I wouldn't really suggest getting a guitar with a floyd rose style trem, unless you know how to change the strings swiftly and easily with a locking trem.

I to play a PRS 408 and that thing is tits. its diverse and the pickups don't suck. and guess what? no gay a** batteries. If you have the money get a PRS. Gibsons are nice but I also have a les paul and my PRS makes it look like s***, they just play way smoother and feel better in your hands. If you can pick one up you will understand. I teach and have been playing for 16 years. GET A PRS

Also if you look all the guys who are really shredding lately aren't using active pickups, go passive if you can. I like the PRS 408 cause it has humbuckers but I can split the humbuckers and get a really cool single coil sound very easily (good for clean parts) and also if you are going to play metal you almost have to get a pedal called a MAXOM 808OD pedal because it boost your mids without letting all the bottom end mud up your s***, makes your fills and lead parts come forward much better. If you are on a budget and don't have 3k to throw at a guitar I found that a great guitar for the money is an Ibanez S series, super thin, passive, and great neck. Otherwise an RG is always pretty dependable. If you can get a good price on one stay away form ESP LTD and just get a real deal ESP, they are a nice guitar but again, batteries. I personally don't ever suggest jacksons or deans, they are built cheap and are more show than go. Schecter makes some good guitars if you can find a hellraiser. Even a PRS SE is a nice guitar for 700 bucks and you can get some models with EMG's (over the standard pickups in SE's which suck) like the Paul Allender SE is a good playing metal guitar with a lot of control. For string use the ernie ball skinny top heavy bottoms, they are essential with any guitar you get.
