The semi autonomous city of Hong Kong in China has been noted for it's demonstrations against direct control from the Communist Chinese government for the last year. The Covid Virus pandemic did slow those protests down but did not stop them

Now, using the pandemic as an excuse, the puppet Chinese mainland parliament has moved to impose it's laws on Hong Kong. They banned demonstrations honoring the dead of the Tienamen Square Massacre of 1989. The demonstrations happened anyway but were muted. The story from Fox News

Hong Kong's police are preparing to be integrated with Beijing's. "Hong Kong Families, Fearing a Reign of Terror, Prepare to Flee the CIty" from the The Washington Post . Meanwhile the Mainland government is promising the new Laws will not be retroactive, from Reuters . I guess we'll see. In a documentary aired by PBS one of the student protesters was from the Mainland. The reason he joined the protests; he had never heard of the Tienamane Massacre before coming to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong residents are beginning to feel the heat from Beijing's influence. Soon the censorship and surveillance state of mainland China will overwhelm their society. When the assimilation is complete we will be hearing even less about Hong Kong in the news. Here's a Blog Post on the topic.

Last night ( July 7, 2020) the Chinese government's firewall took over internet service in Hong Kong. The article "China's Great Firewall Descends on Hong Kong Internet Users" from The Guardian tells the story. People who supported the pro democracy demonstrations are attempting to erase their online footprint fearing retaliation by Chinese security.

The general opinion here in the UK is that the great clarion cry of Boris Johnson offering a home in the UK us simply empty rhetoric. Offering "freedom" to the oppressed etc etc etc. This because the Chinese authorities will never allow the residents of Hong Kong to leave in any significant numbers.

Mr Johnson is all Soundbite.

That's a shame. I guess the world needs some of those South Pacific captains to do another "Dunkirk" in Hong Kong. It's one thing to offer refuge and quite another to provide it and safe passage.
