I saw some kid on a skateboard with a cardboard sign that said:

'Raq was rough.

Yup, you've been to Iraq, and you're 17.

I was with my mom at a Burger King after a long drive and some bum who reaked of cheap beer was harassing her for bus fare and she told him that he should pick up a job application inside if he wanted money bad enough. When he cussed at her and threatened her I flipped my knife open and walked toward him and I never saw a drunk bum run backwards so fast....

Have you donated money to homeless people? Do you work with them on a volunteer basis? Is it possible for these people to change and turn their lives around?

Your thoughts are welcome.

Depends. Why is he homeless? If it's because of mental illness, that's not so easy to solve. It would be easier for an alcoholic or drug addict to decide to become healthy and re-start their life.

Very true, I know people of both types.
Those that are metally ill are those that are not 'sick' enough to be commited and yet 'sick' enough to not be able to intigrate and function within society in any long-term way. The worse stricken can not provide any usefull service at all, living almost completely in their own reality. For these I have pity.
The alcoholic's and drug addicted, if they actually applied themselves and or where faced with a situation where they had no choice, they could reintegrate themselves into the world again and lead productive lives. For most of these I have no pity, and for a few, no respect either.

You can let me know what you think.

I do genuinely feel sorry for those that are in need of shelter and food. I have no problem with trying to help them but what I do have a problem with is how is it best done???

I fear giving money is only being used on drugs or something that won't be of any help to them, so therefore I prefer to offer them food or clothing and give the money to an organisation that is doing their best to provide shelter and all the other needs.

I think you have exactly the right thought. The homeless out on the street panhandling are more than likely out there to get money for alcohol 1st and food 2nd. Offering cloths or food they will except because they are always in need of that. Money would be best served by being given to an orginization or shelter that sevices the needs of the homeless. They too are always in need of such help.
