What is the difference between a phrase and a clause?

edit: OK looked it up; a phrase is part of a clause.

So what is a clause?

A clause has both a subject and a predicate....

Q. If there is one clause does there have to be a second clause? I think it does.

But who am I to say

It's a matter of labels.

Most believe (or want to believe) there is only one Clause.
But it could be argued that there is a second, anti-Clause that some call Krampus.

Just as "If there is a Heaven, does there have to be a Hell?" (second, anti-heaven)

An independent clause is a complete sentence, i.e. "I like bacon."

A dependent clause is not a complete sentence but can still convey meaning conversationally. In the conversation below:

"When do you want to eat some bacon?"

"Before I drink my coffee."

The reply "Before I drink my coffee" is a dependent clause because it's not a complete sentence but expresses a complete answer to the question. It's dependent because it relies on the inferred meaning relayed in the question to be a complete answer...by itself it doesn't mean anything but in the context of the exchange, it means "I want to eat bacon before I drink my coffee."

"It was wonky" is an independent clause, by the way

I went to the oracle of grammar and looked it up, at https://www.thefreedictionary.com/clause

Here is their definition:
1. (Grammar) a group of words, consisting of a subject and a predicate including a finite verb, that does not necessarily constitute a sentence.
See also main clause, subordinate clause, coordinate clause.
What is a clause?

A peculiarity of a clause is that it can stand alone as a sentence. [I think that I read that; or heard it from The Laura Ingraham Show on AM radio.]

Yes, it is working, but it has jumped the tracks. But that is allowed in my world; as the OP I am a lot more relaxed than I sound sometimes.
