The first time i visited my son and daughter in laws new house, she said that she didnt allow shoes in her house.
I was asked to remove them in the hallway. She said that she preferred everyone to wear slippers in her house.
And everytime I visit I have to remove my shoes in the hallway and put on my slippers.I have seen guests as well whilst i have been there doing the same thing.
I must admit that at first i was taken by surprise by her very direct approach.
Perhaps thats the best way to do it.None of her guests seem to mind,or perhaps only like minded people only visit.
But ultimately it is her house and it her first brand new house and she just wants to keep her carpets it in good condition. And whilst it is unsettling to be almost ordered to put on slippers, she has the right in own house to have her own rules. As we all do.
And theres nothing intrinsically wrong in this type of house rule. How would you feel if this happened to you?Or do you insist that shoes come off at the door.Comments please.
But have to say that now i have seen this how successful my daughter in laws shoes off rule has been I plan to introduce the same rule for all visitors and family members as soon as my new carpet gets fitted next week.I have got really comfy slippers for the family to wear and i have bought a selection of washable slippers for gests to wear.I have started explaining my new shoes off rule and shared my reasons for it and asked them to bring their own slippers with them to change into.I still feel that my daughter in law was a little toodirect and i would feel uncomfortable to actually order someone to take their shoes off.
But here that approach has worked for her.The carpets are totally unmarked and apparantly she spends significantly less time cleaning up after her family and friends.
So its really a case of using whatever approach to this controversial house rule that works for you.
Finally i have to say, that all of my family and friends that I have told about shoes off and slippers on have actually agreed with it and responded with alactrity. Most of them have actually thanked me for taking the time to tell them in advance and for explaining my reasons.
How do you all feel about this. Many of you will have this rule so please feel contribute to this important debate.

I've been to people's houses who had that rule. I see no problem with it

I have had friends who ask me to remove my shoes, and I ask people to remove theirs in my house.

I like my flooring and carpet.

I always remove my shoes indoors. But then there's the whole foot odour issue...

I do when it's wet outside or if there's snow out of courtesy to the people I'm visiting, I don't want them to have to mop up or have to get their carpets cleaned just because I didn't have the common decency to remove them, I think it's just courteous unless they tell you to keep them on.

My mom's boyfriend makes everyone remove their shoes before stepping into his appartment. But he just doesn't want his carpets to look like people have been walking on them and wants them to keep looking new.... When I go ther with my mom and he's not there I keep my sneakers on
He's a prick.

kinda gross either way i mean yes dirt on the one hand, but the potential for
germs and foot disease on the other, my opinion leave your shoes on! and sorry
but what if someone has bad foot odor! its just bad all around!

I've had a few people as me to actually put my shoes back on because my feet stunk so bad a few times. It was funny, but kinda embarassing at the same time.
