It has long been observed? though not scientifically? that women seem to show a vague preference for men who are already spoken for. This observation is known as the wedding ring effect, and there are numerous competing theories as to why it may be.

I read about that a few years ago in a book about the psychology of relationships. It has heen studied scientifically in that sense, as psychologists have long been interested in the phenomenon. It just hasn't been studied in a stereotypical lab environment. But yes, it's a fairly common occurence. People are interesting.

I'm in the rarity that I've never fallen for a taken guy. Huge disrespect in my book.
I know Seinfeld did an ep on this and George of course wore the wedding ring and then found all these women who would have gone with him if he had not had the ring

I'm the same, I've never liked/fallen for a guy who was taken. If they're with someone they are off-limits in my head.

Like in Scrubs, where no-one is after Carla when she is wearing her ring, but when she takes it off they are all over her

I only wore a ring during my second marriage, until it almost caused me to have my finger torn off. But while I wore it, it did seem to have a magical effect on some women!

Or perhaps I should say it was not a hinderance.

That was interesting - goes against the stereotypical bias that many of us have. For instance, many womean
(not just women, but women especially) will wear a ring to ward off being hit on by men. That seems to be thought of as the norm.

Though once you reflect on it, it does make sense in different ways: a) guys like the challenge, the manna a
manno competition (yes some women too); and b) it may seem
easier/or more 'nurturing' to step in and fix when a married man or woman is going throug the blues.
