I had this debate with a bunch of my college buddys on finals week once and found it interesting. In the end Neither side won and we only could agree that No one likes to get Shanked.

Ok so the question I pose is... Is good and evil defined somewhere Like is it in our programing or something we just inheritly know or is it Defined by society?

Discuss.... 8)

I reckon it's defined by society, caused a huge argument between me and my philosophy tutor!

Good and evil do not exist. They are simply subjective opinions of an individual, or group of people.

For true good and evil to exist the criteria would have to be set by a higher authority than human beings.

I think what constitutes good and evil is influenced by both the society and culture you live in and your own individual views. I persoanlly don't think that you can define good and evil, because they are two very ambigious concepts. For example, murder is seen by most people as 2evil", but because someone is a murderer doesn't make them evil. After all, the murderer could have done hundreds of "good" actions, so one "evil" action doesn't negate them.

I don't think its defined. Everyone has different views on what evil is and what makes a good person etc. Although there are a few common views that most people agree on, theres no black and white line.

We are capable of pretty much any act, society determines where an act is good or evil. So it is possible to say that humans contain evil be we can consciously choose to exceed these boundries.

Given the wide range of actions different groups have considered right or wrong it would be difficult to prove these boundries are hardwired.

I know it generally causes really interesting discusions. and there are some good arguments saying it is defined somewhere and not needing a higher individual I how ever do not know them because I argue society.

True. You can judge the action without judging the person.

Yes but you have to agree that there are alot of evil acts we all concider evil like killing so maybe that is hardwired I mean There might be a time where something is concedered good but later we can find it to be evil because it has always been we just we blinded at a moment

We really need some none society people in this because it turns really interesting I can try to argue both sides but in the end there is only one side i am good at.

Killing is not and has not always been considered evil. Gladitatorial combat, duelling, holy wars, general wars, exposure of children and is even now considered acceptable in some forms.

We may consider it evil but they didn't. We our simply basing our opinion of it from our societies viewpoint.

I could take a stab from moral equivalency point of view but that involves accepting the superiority of western civilisation to work. Could get messy.
