This is what I got so far. I'm even thinking of putting it on a plaque or something:

10 Promises

I promise to always love you.
Even when we fight, no matter where you are or what you’ve done,
you will never be without my love.

I promise to put you before anything else in my life.
You come first, no matter what.

I promise to create a peaceful home.
You deserve to feel safe and secure.

I promise to listen closely and without judgment.
Nothing you will do or say will change how I feel about you.

I promise to allow you the freedom to fail, I will forgive your
mistakes, and apologize when I am wrong.

I promise to remember that you have your own valid feelings, opinions and inner guidance.

I promise to teach you morals and values, as well as let you develop your own view points.

I promise to show you the value of hard work and the rewards that come along with it.

I promise to set firm boundaries and hold you accountable for your actions, but allow you the room to make your own mistakes and learn your own lessons.

I promise to hug, kiss, hold, praise and play with you.
You mean more to me than anything, you deserve to see that.

I'm gonna try my damnedest, that's for sure.
My childhood was very rough. Substance abuse, domestic abuse, I was neglected, I bounced around from home to home... and my birth mother was 19 and my dad was 22. My birth mother didn't stick around though, she let my father and (step)mom have me.

One thing is for certain, I'm gonna push this kid. Hard.

"One thing is for certain, I'm gonna push this kid. Hard."

This phrase worries me. It is almost menacing.

I know you are referring to pregnancy, but this whole post has overtones of "Here endeth the first lesson - now all stand for the hymn 'She Who Would Abstinent Be' ".

I don't think you have adequate perspective to preach on this issue - as another poster pointed out already, by no means all young mothers experience anything like the problems you promote as being almost inevitable, with a heavy dose of fear-laden angst. That is not helpful to give a common sense view to young girls.

Go easy on your own kid - or you will make their life a living hell under the auspices of a deranged control freak.

I don't mean it as scary as I made it sound.
I didn't really have that extra push in my life. Not to go for extra-curricular activities or anything.
I'd start a hobby (soccer, violin, guitar) and I'd get bored because it was too hard and I'd just quit. No one ever said:
"No, you're gonna go through with this. You started it, you gotta follow through"

It made me lazy. You know?

That song reminds me of my dad. It's a sad song.
You can't take things in life for granted, you know?

Sounds really good. I like it . I think, despite the circumstances, you're gonna do pretty well compared to others in your situation.

No need to push - once a child finds the activities they like they will soon have the motivation. Pushing just heaps stress on a child and then guilt if they want to give it up but fear the angry response from the parent. That isn't healthy, lol.

UPDATE:

I am no longer with the father of my baby.
It's messy, dramatic, sad and difficult. I hate it.

This just prove having a baby doesn't solve s***.
We were okay before I got pregnant. I'm not saying that we were perfect or that it's the baby's fault, but pregnancy really does change EVERYTHING.

So factual and so in your face.

Every teenager should read this before they decide how much of a blessing having a baby with their boyfriends 'would' be.

Not to take from any of what you've said here, all of which is true and well said, but none of it is anything new. I'm sure you heard this all yourself even before you were pregnant, as I did before I had my little oops baby.

The problem is not so much that people don't know these things beforehand, but the words all feel rather hollow until there is the experience of it to fill them.

Keep on preaching the message, for it's a solid and responsible one, and now you really understand the warning or are at least beginning to, now the message has some real meaning to you, but the most of the young women who have or will get pregnant already know all of these things; the words are still just hollow to them without the experiences to make them really mean something.
