"750 million genetically engineered mosquitoes approved for release in Florida Keys"

"A plan to release over 750 genetically modified mosquitoes into the Florida Keys in 2021 received final approval from local authorities, against the objection of many local residents and a coalition of environmental advocacy groups. The plan had already won state and federal approval.

With all the urgent crises facing our nation and the State of Florida — the Covid-19 pandemic, racial injustice, climate change — the administration has used tax dollars and government resources for a Jurassic Park experiment," said Jaydee Hanson, policy director for the International Center for Technology Assessment and Center for Food Safety, in a statement released Wednesday."

What could possibly go wrong?

PS
To date, Florida I tried to introduce various species of animal and plants to fix some perceived problem. So far each effort has been a failure... usually a massive failure!

Let's do it Florida!

What are they trying to fix?

OK, I found the article.

Interesting that it was approved during an administration known to be friendly to corporations, even at the expense of the environment.

Not accusing anything here. But, hey. Was it looked into? Maybe it should be looked into from a different side ...? Who knows. Could be nothing. But think of all the money that could be made if this became a common practice.

-----

From an environmental side, for those questioning impact on other species - has that been studied at the other locations?
I was thinking the same thing? What are knock-on effects that weren't studied?

How are they modified? What is the purpose of the genetic manipulation?

How are they modified?

The mosquito....has been altered to produce female offspring that die in the larval stage.

Male mosquitos don't bite humans, only female mosquitoes do that.

If the female mosquitos don't exist (die before hatching) then they cannot bite humans... therefore cannot transmit diseases like dengue, Zika, yellow fever, malaria, etc.

So that is super great! Right?

Well, if there are no females then eventually there won't be any males either... i.e. no mosquitos at all.... and mosquitoes are good for a variety of things...food for fish and other insect predators and birds.... they are pollinators for some plants... etc...

So the plan, if it works could impact the environment negatively.

And if the mosquitos adapt, i.e. evolve to overcome this human made mutation one could imagine a mosquito that was worse than the ones before.

etc.

Florida has a long history of f***ing around with the environment and failing miserably.

Yeah, something always goes sideways when they start messing with the animal populations. Something else will fill the niche.
