i don't know, define freedom, in a way we have alot of freedom.
more than at anytime in history.

i'll be the first to argue how there's freedoms i don't want taken away that are currently threatened, but in a way we are very much free.

so how are we not free? and we can discuss that.

freedom is not something you can have "some of". either you are entirely free or you aren't. being free specifically entails whats best for the many and not for the few. and as we've seen so f***ing many times, it's always whats best for the few.

i disagree whole heartedly.
tell me what aspect of your freedom has been quelled and we can discuss that, right now i'm not sure what you mean.

we can never be 'totally free' since we are social creatures and lets say, i can't be 'free' to kick someone in the head for no reason, nor to murder or steal.

I didn't mean freedom for the individual, i mean freedom for the many. and obviously the freedom of the many is living in peace. Not to say that individual freedom should not be encouraged.

We are surrounded by violence. That's the only reason we're violent. If you grew up in Canada would you be afraid of gangs?

ah, i see,
yes people in canada fear gangs too, every country has gangs.
but i see what you mean.

we do of course largely live free of violence,
whens the last time armed militias kicked your door down?

people fear everything, its what we do, its what all animals do,
you could say the media perpetuates this fear, and they do.
but what you seem to think is that this is done with much more concious effort than is necessary or likely.
people buy papers with things written on the front that scares them, thats enough for scary things to be written, its self perpetuating.

Everything I've come to know about freedom is that it requires sacrifice. Anything that anyone's expressed about freedom is that it requires discomfort and pain. It's a constant struggle for the dreams of the few and no the many. Some people say they want freedom, most even claim to already have it. What people really want isn't freedom. It's comfort. They want to shut themselves off and embark on a routine. Which is fine. If your a machine. Well, welcome to the machine.

7th there is a saying that counters this arguement, it goes like this..

Give a man a Inch and he will take a mile... which means.. give people enough of something and they will want more... control is sometimes not a bad thing.

hmm,
i don't live in fear, of violence or fashion.

you do realise we both live in the safest parts of the world?
thats not to say bad things don't happen or that there isn't places that need improving.
but its an important perspective to have.

in no place in history have people had the level of saftey from violence you enjoy. hard to take in eh?

i don't think hes basing it on a saying but rather on an established fact about human psychology.
