I just felt like started a lively debate to find interesting arguments on the subject

The First Amendment states guarantees freedom of the press...

School newspapers are not allowed to publish anything that is to risqu? or may disrupt the school...

Students are not allowed to wear apparel (not necessarily obscene) that may possibly disrupt the school including controversial political messages...

Should they be allowed, they are guaranteed by the constitution to have these freedoms? Or is school a place to learn fundamentals, not a place to make a statement?

that's actually a pretty complicated debate. It depends a lot on what type of
school you're going to and what state you're going to school in.

I gonna assume you're talking about highschools. Anyway, yes, students
should be allowed first ammendment rights. There shouldn't be any
restrictions on their freedom of speech and I think in certain states a
highschool newspaper can say anything as long as it's not libelous, but I'm
not sure because they they are still minors an adult may have to be held
responsible, so the advisor or someone esle might have final say.

As for dress code, there is something called indecent exposure, and I think
some clothes may actually be libelous, but other than that, all clothes should
be allowed in my oppinoin.

There's no laws against bad taste.

Hey, if ignorance is bliss, shouldn't ignorance be a right?

I didn't know your constitution guaranteed bliss. Does that mean if I move to America, Julia
Roberts will live at my house?

we guarantee "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," so nothing's for sure. In other
words, I guess we guarantee the pursuit of ignorance.

Yeah, the schools sure wouldn't want kids to have to have to actually make a decision for themselves??? <being sarcastic>
Schools think they have to tell high schooler's every move to make... "walk this way, read THIS book, dress this way"... etc, etc. I'd love to see high school kids treated differently; not like a 1st grader. Let the teens speak! Don't shield every little thing from them. Teens are not stupid by no means! Let them be the "almost adult" that they are. My daughter & son have lots of their friends in and out around here- it's really fun being around them!
Anyway, I really do think schools here in America seem to only focus on book learning crap- not real life issues.

Yes I think that these young people should be able to express themselves because it's healthy to and they arn't going to learn how to express themselves when it's going to be supressed! And I feel if you do ban them it will just make things worst they will want to speak out some more 8)

A school news paper is not "the press", and no you should all wear uniforms 'cause you can't hide weapons and you look darn cute.

I hope that was sarcastic. If a school newspaper isn't "the press" what is?
