I think they start out the same.
The love part is slower and sticks around when the crush fades.
Crushes always fade or change, either because of something about the person, you of even if they go unacted on, or by time.

There is the lover and the beloved

When it is mutual it is love

When unrequited it is a crush.

You have a crush on the cheerleader with whom you've become casual acquaintances.

You've fallen in love with your chem-lab partner that you've worked with all year.

Who do you ask to the prom?

Time.

Side note: If it seems like it could be the theme of a modern love song, it is probably a crush bordering on stalking.

The chem-lab partner

don't physically touch her at any time and don't say anything to her that she could find offensive and above all do not do anything that would make her uncomfortable.

I'd agree with Discord with exception that the term 'Falling in love' is hyperbole compared to what it actually is and probably why most people expect too much.

Like that film 'Waiting to exhale' you're looking for someone whom you feel secure with and trusting of as you would your parents or your siblings.

Someone who doesn't take long to feel genuine like family does.

They are few and far between but from experience growing up (I didn't make many friends simply as I had nothing interesting to engage strangers in conversation with) if you remain friendly you can weed through them much quicker.

Also, you really really need to pay close attention to their personality, beliefs, politics etc and take them seriously - I've had a few ex-girlfriends who may have taken cleavers to me had the relationships gone on for a long time while others were really attractive and never developed empathy because they couldn't understand why others weren't easily being offered the same privileges and opportunities.

Hmmmm,

I think the idea of love is definied by everyone a little different. Usually in a self serving way to describe their own relationships as the best example of it.

In my mind a crush is a little more superficial and less serious, i've had crushes on many people but only fallen in love with a few.

I think of a crush as an intense temporary romantic attraction i.e., infatuation

A crush is generally referred to what happens when one falls for another person, regardless of whether the feeling is mutual between the two.

Falling in love is generally referred to what happens with both fall for each other.

Both are typically references to the early stage of a romantic process.

Genuine love may or may not come later.
