Ive been reading a set of interviews and really everyband that has been labbelled as emo has lashed out agiainst it so i have come to a conclusion that "emo" doesnt actually exist. Here is an interview with Guy Picciotto of Fugazi and Rites of Spring:

"Question: Okay so, whether you like it or not, you're basically considered to be the creator of "emo." And I was just wondering - why have you always thrown yourself so emotionally into your music?

Answer: Well, first of all, I don't recognize that attribution. I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me."

Also most recent bands of Funeral for a frien and Fightstar have also lashed out against such termonology saying it doesnt exist. How can something exist when everyone who is labelled as involved refutes the existance. What do you think? Is it just a folk devil?

I, personally, love emo music. It's different. But I know that other people have different opinions on this. Depends on your personality.

I dont thik you understand my statement is that the genre "emo" is actally a folk devil of the recent generations. They have legitimate genre's the term emo as seen in a context analysis of interviews does not exist.

I like the music its good, you just got my hypothesis wrong.

It's emo if you call it that. Take Radiohead for example; The labels you could
give them:
-Alt
- Space Rock
- Alternative Rock
- Blues
- Easy Listening
Basically, if someone wants to call a band emo, then call 'em f***ing emo.
Theres no big deal about it. Like, what is the big deal about being labled emo?
I'd just call it being diverse. It's been hyped up WAY too much.

Yeah, actually I've thought about this too. It's like nu-metal...it's disliked so much that bands instantly reject the label, and try their hardest to escape it.
Mudvayne for example, losing their paint...

Emo is the same, it's got so many people disliking it, despite the amounts of fans, that the bands will naturally reject it...and sooner or later bands will instantly start trying to escape it by changing their style.

Yeah i know if someone wants ot call it something they can but, doesnt it seem a tad weird that bands that are associated with emo refuse to use the term and even fight agianst it. I just think there is something there, thats all?

I've noticed too that there seems to be a negative connotation with a band being labeled as "emo"

The whole genre thing is really messed up

Yep, we should go back to basics actually, the one thing i agreed with jmo over. Also when the fathers of a supposed genre reject and show the other possibility's, emo may just be a media folk devil?

Ha. Every Emo I know would shoot and hang you for that. Their similar in some ways, but
different in others.
In a nutshell, (I may be wrong) but:

-Goth= Angry, hate the world sorta attitude. Big brutish jewellry etc.

-Emo = A more?"Dainty", refined form of gothic. It's calmer and quieter as such. Doesn't
care about showing emotions, whilst Goths are all "Hide from the world with lots of scary
clothing".

Just my veiw.

There have been alot of bands that have lashed out agaisnst the label including the band who have been lashed out at!! because of having the label assigned to them and they hate it surprisingly so there are bands out there that have been labelled and who hate their label
