Hey, trekweb here. What does everyone think about Einstein's Theory of Relativity? I mean, do you think that Th speed of light is the same for all observers, no matter what their relative speeds are?

Well, the constancy of the speed of light is a significant consequence of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. You can't really argue agaist it.

"speed of light is the same for all observers"

are you referring to the doppler shift or the ehrenfest paradox?

He just means that any observer will measure the same photon traveling at the same speed, even if one observer is moving with respect to the other. This is in contrast to two observers measuring a box car - they will disagree on the relative speed.

I love the fact that the work of one of the greatest physicists the planet has ever seen can be openly questioned by a bunch of monkeys on an internet forum site, don't you? I mean, I'm guessing that I can count the number of nobel prizes won between us on no hands, right?

If I'm a monkey, what are you? Especially with a typo like "monkey's"?

Bite me

But you get my point. It's like everything on the internet - all hot air and no substance. "Do you think Einstein was right?" - I'd love to see some evidence backing up any views expressed in this thread. Even a thought experiment that leads to contradictory results than the special theory would be nice.

But it's all going to be pseudo-science and psycho-babble, as I believe you yourself once said.

I'd never say something like that.

i have a feeling that the current physics models that we accept will evolve
greatly, in time

especially in regards to cosmology

Actually, this theory could extend your life by several hundred years. The closer to the speed of light you reached, the slower time would move for you. Hundreds of years could pass, and only 20 or 30 for you. Of course, this depends on how fast you could reach the speed of light and how long you could sustain it. Of course, this also raises the ethical question : do you want to outlive everyone you know, and everyone who knew them?

Hundreds of years could pass on earth, but you will still age 20 years for the 20 years of your time that you were in your spaceship or whatever.

This is good for theoretical time travel, but not life extension. If you were willing to waste 20 years of your life isolated in some vessel that moved at a very high velocity relative to the earth, you could return to earth after, say, 50 earth years have passed. But you will still have aged 20 years in the 20 years you spent in the vessel.

I wouldn't want to be traveling at the speed of light. Run into something the size of a grain of sand and it would be over.

That's good because you couldn't even if you really really wanted to

Not to mention that from my back of a napkin calculation, accelerating to the speed of light in anything less than about 9 months would probably kill you.

Even at 10g it'd take about a month to accelerate to c. That is not my idea of a good time! My numbers could be off though, can't be bothered to check them.
