Egyptian Father Names Daughter "Facebook"

It's actually true.

"A new Egyptian father has named his daughter Facebook in honour of the role social media played in his country's recent revolution.

Jamal Ibrahim told Al-Ahram newspaper his newborn's unusual name showed how happy he was with Facebook's part in organising protests across Egypt.

Thousands of protesters in January packed Tahrir Square and other cities in Egypt for 18 days calling for an end to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.

Family, friends and neighbours have reportedly gathered around the newborn to show their continued support for the revolution they say started on the social networking site."

Reminds me of the Cuban woman who named her son Usnavy, after the first "American" word she saw upon 'immigration'.

I can just imagine all the taunting/mean jokes that will be said to her when she's of school age. Probably more so in high school. That poor girl.

Wow I feel horrible for that child..imagine what mean jokes will be said when they reach school...That doesn't make any sense really...but if you can name your child after days of the week, months, flowers and stuff...why can't you name them after social networking sites?

Well, there is a bit of a difference between days of the week, months, flowers, etc...and a name someone made up out of two other words. I honestly think that if the name was something different, it wouldn't be such a big deal. Like...expedia

It would still be strange, but later on down the road it's not like you're going to have to explain why you were named Bookshelf or Coffeetable. It just seems a bit less innocuous. (probably not the right word)

There is a difference between naming kids after flowers and such vs after a company. I wouldn't like a kid named McDonalds

That poor child. What on earth are people thinking when they name their kids something as outlandish as that? Moon Unit, Zowie and Fifi Trixibelle fade into insignificance when compared to it.

I actually think Moon Unit is an awesome name It conjures up MFI on the moon to me.
