Drew Carey becomes new host of "The Price is Right"

'Genial comic Drew Carey was tapped Monday to replace silver-haired legend Bob Barker on the CBS daytime game show "The Price is Right." The deal was set Monday afternoon shortly before a taping of CBS' "Late Show" with David Letterman, where he confirmed it.

"I realize what a big responsibility this is," he said. "It's only a game show, but it's the longest-running game show in American television and I plan to keep it that way."

The selection attracted more attention than usual for a daytime show because of the prospect of replacing Barker, 83. Barker retired after 35 years in the job last month following taping of his 6,586th episode.'

I don't mind Drew Carey, I just really can't picture "The Price is Right" without Bob Barker.

More or less. There are a bunch of different games the contestants play and a new one is chosen after every round from the audience.

Don't forget the big wheel they spin.

I wonder how heavy that wheel is.

It looks heavy and I wonder if it has broken loose and rolled into the audience. There was a cover up I reckon.

The show is split into two parts:

In the first part, contestants guess the price of a displayed item. The one closest (without going over) gets to play a game to win a prize. This often leads to amusing, mean bidding. If the first contestant guesses $700, it's not uncommon for the second one to guess $701, effectively guaranteeing that first person cannot win.

The second part is the game. There are all sorts of games, and most rely far more on chance than skill.

After a contestant finishes his or her game, he or she is sent back into the audience and a new contestant is pulled randomly from the audience.
