An Israeli dog was sentenced to death by stoning by a Rabbinical court in Israel who it feared was a reincarnation of a lawyer who insulted its judges, according to reports. The animal is said to have escaped before the sentence was carried out, and one of the judges at the court in the city's ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighbourhood had reportedly asked local children to carry out the sentence.

The picture of a dog in the BBC article is not, by the way, a picture of the fugitive.

How can such superstitious people be invested with legal power?

That's the thing. In some eastern studies, religions law is higher than governmental law. So those that have "religious" power are of those men who are also have governmental power. However, you can have governmental power but not religious power... but since religious power trumps governmental power... you get the point.

Until religion is separated from State, this type of stuff will continue. Well... that and a massive rebellion by it's people.

This was one of the main things we ended up arguing about in a couple of my world religion courses.

This reminds me of a report I read a few years ago.

"Police in Nigeria are holding a goat handed to them by a vigilante group, which said it was a car thief who had used witchcraft to change shape.

A police spokesman in Kwara State has been quoted as saying that the "armed robbery suspect" would remain in custody until investigations were over.

But another police spokesman told the BBC the goat was being held in case its owner claimed it.

The belief in witchcraft and the power to change shapes is common in Nigeria.

Police reform activists have condemned the "arrest", saying it highlights the low education levels of many Nigerian police officers.

Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper has a picture of the goat and reports that police paraded it in front of journalists in the Kwara state capital Ilorin on Thursday.

But this was denied by national police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu.

"The vigilante group arrested the goat and took it to the police, then they told the media."

The next morning journalists turned up demanding to see the goat, he said.

"But of course goats can't commit crime.""

Uhhhhhhhnnnnnnnn. This hurts my brain.

Granted in western civilization there are periods of history in which religion was the law and the body politic...but that was...how long ago?

I think I was lost at seeing "Israeli" and "reincarnation" in the same sentence.

I didn't think so either. I read the article and it said that they cursed the lawyer's spirit to enter a dog.

Anyway, the court objected to the article so they printed a new one.
