Does Ich bin ein Berliner really mean I am a doughnut?

I just stumbled across this urban legend by coincidence.. never heard it.

I can also certify that as a German Native speaker (Austrian, though) it has never ever occurred to me to find "Ich bin ein Berliner" incorrect or misleading. I am 100% convinced no Native speaker will think of the pastry when hearing it. "Ich bin Berliner" means "I am a person from Berlin" (can you say Berliner in English similar to New Yorker? )) ), "Ich bin *ein* Berliner" has a meaning so subtly different I never even thought about it. It means rather "I am (one of many) Berliners", the connotation of pastry is completely made up.

Maybe by someone who was not a Native speaker and misunderstood the grammar rule(s).

And yes, Sterbst Du, Ruckgesicht will earn nothing but confusion.
