Do you think it's possible for someone to fake a mental illness?

Im not a rude or mean person, in fact I'm quite the opposite. And as for being critical of other's, we all are to some extent.

Quote:
I think sometimes when a person doesn't seem to fit in there looked at as strange and something is wrong with them,
To many people including doctors put a label on them.
If you dont like what some one is. Choose another to hang out with.

I agree with what you're saying about how when someone doesn't fit in they're classed as strange, because I've been there myself, but tell me, if you knew someone who told you flat out the reason for all the unexplained murders was due to the workings of vampires, that you wouldn't them strange?

As for doctor's usually they base their conclusions on whatever you've told them, so if you walk in to the surgery claiming to have Bipolar symptoms because you've just read a book on it, the doctor will diagnose that as the case.
Just like if you go to the doctor's b****ing and moaning about being unable to sleep, they'll take you're word for it and give you some sleeping tablets.

Choosing another group to hang out with, well I'd like too and so would my partner but unfortunately she's his sister and he feels he can't just disown her, though he has thought about it. And I stick by whatever he thinks is right.....though he knows where I stand!

I haven't been on line too long but I have seen some pretty strange situations. One was at the last web site I was at.

There was this person who was online almost all day and night. never seemed to get off computer and she wasn't that old of a gal either, . She was living her life through the imagionary person she became on this site. and one day her child uplugged the computer. and she went nuts. and when she got back on line. She told us all how she grounded her child who I beleive was around 10 because he unplugged her computer.and she was very angry with the child. I ahave never seen anyone so upset over something like that, Such anger with her child because , she had a hard time getting back to her life on line,
even a family member on this site felt bad for the kid , to be punished for such a thing.
This person needed a job and a life . and that wasn't normal

I agree, but according to some people if you say something about someone who is different, you're nothing but a rude, mean person who likes to bag out other's for you're own amusement.
When it's not like that at all....

. . .

Lets just assume that she has Bipolar, why would she want the whole world to know?

Why? For sympathy. For attention. As others have already stated, psychological disorders can be faked just as any other physical condition can be faked to some extent. A mental health professional can usually tell whether or not someone is malingering, so if you really want to know if her condition is legitimate, ask to speak to the individual who diagnosed her . . . if there is one. I have seen a number of people who self-diagnose themselves as bipolar (just like they do with a number of other illnesses) simply because they think it's cool or that people will treat them in a different or better manner. Or even because they might see a few signs that they themselves seem to exhibit. Yeah, I have x, y, and z symptoms, so I obviously have this condition. When in reality, they might have something else entirely or might not have anything. They just want people to know that they are not complaining for the heck of it--they really have something. So, if they label their problems, then it makes it seem better, more legitimate somehow.

I'd like to, but unfortunately there's this thing called Doctor Patient Confidentiality...
Plus I don't think she went to a doctor, cos she said her councilor diagnosed her and I know he exists.

I know someone who thinks she's got AIDS because she has a cold or she thinks she going to die of cancer because she found a lump....self diagnoses is usually the work of hypocondriacts!

if she has to pretend to be mentally ill to get attention then she still has problems...sometimes people use the excuse of having a mental illness to take the blame off themselves for not achieving things or doing things etc....its much easier to say "i didnt pass my exams because i was very stressed and depressed at the time" instead of telling the real truth to yourself or any1 else "i didnt pass my exams because i didnt even try to study"......dont fully decide that this girl is being a liar/drama queen....maybe as a friend you could try encourage her, tell her that maybe instead of waiting for 'the white knight' she could get out of her room and out of her books and go with you to a party and start tryna look for him??? some people hold on to childlike beliefs like vampires etc because they dont want to face reality because they are afraid of the real world....and in all honesty why shouldnt they be?.....whether she is mentally ill or faking it either way shes gonna need a good friend, if you feel its necessary, gently try and lure her into the 'real world'

I am well aware of doctor-patient confidentiality. I was being facetious. As technically that is the only way you will know.

And due to popular misconceptions about hypochondriacs, they often actually do have something wrong with them (other than a mental diagnosis). Oftentimes, many of them exaggerate actual symptoms because they are so frustrated that they are getting no where when they visit their physicians who disregard their angst or worry.

She may be faking. But Just how old is she? Because some people depending on how old they are will act childish because they have had a traumatic expeirience in their past and they are acting how they acted back then. But also she may still want to be a child still she hasn't gotten used to the Idea of being an adult. But it all depends how is she being immature? Is she just being the annoying immature or does she still think shes a kid? Next time you see her ask her old she is. She may say shes 10 or something well thats what she thinks. If she does you might have to tell her shes not. But I don't think she would be that bad. Hope I have been of some help.
And with the Bipolar thing don't think thats shes faking it bipolar has rapid mood changes as one of the symptoms. And also the childish thing may be a part of the Bipolar. Because if you think shes faking it the next day when you come to work she may be dead. So just take the time everytime you see her ask her how are you? Or how was your day? It may not seem much but asking her that may improve her mood. It does with me. Hope I have Helped.

Take Care

this girl is 23, and she acts immature as in, she knows how old she is, but it's almost like she's trapped in the mind-set of a sixteen year old. Though she has moments where she does act her age.

I think it's because she's afraid of failure, so she doesn't have a boyfriend, or go to Uni, or experience life, because she's afraid that if she fails she'll get ridiculed.
So she live's in a make-believe world of fairies and dragons.

i know this girl and she has worked and quit her job numerous times only to go to the doctor and get a note stating she is unable to work because of her mental illness.she claims to be bi-polar. she has applied for disability and has been denied. she has not gone to any specialist that i know of. with in the last 4 years she was into drugs really bad. her mom kicked her out and she ended up at the mission a homeless shelter this girl has two kids and refuses to pay child support of 100.00 a month for both of them. she now is 6000.00 plus dollars behind and is living in a shelter now for mental people, has nothing to do with the kids unless it is convient for her. i don't believe for a minute that she is mental i think she is lazy!! what do u think?

Well theres obviously something wrong with her, perhaps something like delusional disorder or possibly even psychopathy. She may be bipolar but honestly, I don't think its the biggest of her problems.

I've known this girl for two years and her behaviour has me stumped. She's the sort of person who hasn't grown up, she still believe's in fairies and vampires, spends days in her room reading romance novels and live's her life believing a white knight will come and get her, despite other's and myself telling her to grow up and be more realistic. She's also very attention seeking, manlipulative, a cronic lier, and materialistic.

About 6mths ago, she came to me and told me that she had Bipolar, at first I believed her, but recently it's become difficult for me trust a word that come's out of her mouth due to some circumstances that arose that have made me question many things about her. It's gotten to the point where not even her own family believe she's sick, we all think she's just saying it to get sympathy and attention.

Do you think it's possible to fake a mental illness?

All mental illness' are fake.
