Indeed the story of Pharoah ordering the death of all the first born Jews because of his soothsayers warning of one that would be born among them and defeat him fits quite well with this common thread. As would the crucifixion of Jesus.

Pretty common and standard mythological motif.... nothing new nor unique.

Cronus or Kronos from Greek mythology castrated his father Uranus for keeping him and his siblings in darkness. He then re-imprisoned them. Cronus ate his young but the last of his offspring, Zeus was saved by his mother who tricked Cronus into eating a rock instead. Saturn is the same in Roman mythology who ate his young.

So it seems killing ones children like Abraham or the mass killing of children by Moloch is indeed a repeated theme in religion; all to keep the younger generation from overtaking their generation in power and ability. A way to avoid the "payback is a b****" problem of being a tyrant. It's interesting to think about how, if these people where reincarnating. that would affect the evolution of society. It would definitely hold mankind back from reaching their full potential. It takes a lot of religious superstition and political manipulation to create events like that.

No. Isaac was spared. That time the father did not kill his son.

Ok - I'm gonna just say this; That was a fairly provocative post I put up and I was really hoping it would stimulate some conversation.

That's a great hope. There's less than 20 regular posters in the forum and often folks have long since weighed in on many of the big questions dealing with religion and politics.

I use The Forum Site for conversation on occasion but my expectations for fruitful dialog are throttled by my previous experience.

Your friend is correct. The story is really about just that.... and at a deeper level the farmer vs the city dweller.

I'd rather trust a countryman than a townman,
You can judge by his eyes, take a look if you can,
He'll smile through his guard,
Survival trains hard.
I'd rather trust a man who works with his hands,
He looks at you once, you know he understands,
Don't need any shield,
When you're out in the field.

Reincarnation is religion is far more widespread than most realize.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reincarnation

Just because a religion does not teach it's adherents about reincarnation or possibly attempt to suppress that knowledge, does not mean the leadership of the religion don't know about it. It can be used to control people ways most are not aware of.

The phrase caught my attention from the very first time I heard it.

This is my point about the Tanakh; notice the repetitive story lines? Notice how certain characters in the stories do the same thing or similar things? Notice how even groups of people seem to do the same things?

What if these are reincarnated souls repeating their patterns?
