As the national debt clock ticked past the ignominious $13 trillion mark overnight, Congress pressed to pass a host of supplemental spending bills to, among other things, fund the continuing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, ramp up security on the U.S.-Mexico border and prevent teacher layoffs.

Good point. Let's cut the military and border spending so we can save some money

Also we should raise taxes.

Yeah, I guess it's better if they stop funding troops, stop protecting our borders, and lay off teachers.

I'm confused about what it is that you think should be done. On the one hand, you want to tighten border security, and really crack down on illegal immigration. And yet, at the same time, it is implied in this post that you are criticizing congress for allocation money to go toward border security. So is your position that the government should be a 100% volunteer effort then, or what?

The thing is, we really do need to cut spending and raise taxes. We do need to be more responsible with our deficit. We've needed to do this for a couple few decades now.

I would like to see a gradual change in fiscal policy so as to not further upset our already fragile economy. After all the crap that has gone down in the economic world, I seriously fear any sudden and dramatic moves that might upset the apple cart further.

Of the very few things our government should be responsible for, and you want them cut.

And of course, raise taxes. A dem never suggests cuts unless it weakens our defense.

It would be excellent to lay off teachers or to cut their pay at the very least.

You described spending on defense and the borders as a "spending spree."

You're the one who described this spending in an obviously negative way. The clear implication was that you want Congress to stop spending money on these items.

I didn't write that, but we should control our borders, of course. Make cuts elsewhere to finance it though.

That's.... interesting. Why is laying off teachers and cutting their already-low pay a good thing?

Already low pay? The teachers in my area make about $45k/yr for 8 months worth of work. Hardly low.

Mainly get rid of the rubber rooms and quit just handing those "teachers" a pay check.
