I was vegetarian until I became pregnant with my son (second pregnancy).

The desire for beef was so overwhelming I had to eat it.

Having worked in the social services, I can assure you there are many more children who are nutritionally deprived on the standard diet because more people employ that type of diet. I wonder if it is the veganism that is so dangerous, why so many vegans have healthier and longer lives? Perhaps it is the ignorance of the parents that is the problem.

I was a vegetarien for two and half years before I got pregnant with my daughter. I didn't want to sabotage my pregnancy without eating meat, because I wasn't sure if that was a good thing to do or not. Plus, I was craving meat like a starved vampire

I still eat it. Don't know how I went so long without it

I was vegetarian before I became vegan and found it more difficult, too. I have not eaten animal products for decades and have lower cholesterol and better health than ever before. Most degenerative diseases comes from our animal-based diets, even though they are generally accepted.

That article is poorly written and contains very little factual info. And where she has tried to state facts, she's wrong.

This isn't a story about veganism, but of ignorant parents. A human baby should be fed human milk. But when that can't be done parents can use soy formula, which is vegan. Babies thrive on this vegan formula the world over (though it should be a last resort as obviously human milk is best).

The writer talks about deficiencies .. such as Vitamin D.

Today, all milk is fortified with Vitamin D. The reason for that is children were becoming Vitamin D deficient on an omnivorous diet that included milk and were developing rickets. To combat rickets, they started supplementing all milk with Vitamin D.

The supplement used in nearly all milk is Vitamin D2, which is a plant based form of D.

So, milk is not enough to prevent Vit D deficiency, and a plant based supplement is necessary.

The fat in fish is nearly all artery clogging cholesterol. Very little is omega-3. Flax, chia, and hemp are all excellent sources of omega-3.

If a person eats enough calories to maintain their weight, they will get enough protein. Nearly everything has protein.

This is an opinion piece, and not one I agree with. I think there are healthy and unhealthy ways of going vegan, and it is possible for vegans to get all the essential fatty acids (protein building blocks), which would be passed in the breast milk. A grain plus a legume would provide complete proteins. Those essential fatty acids, btw, are used by the infants body to make the DHA this article is talking about babies missing from their vegan mother's milk. It would definitely be missing in a baby fed nothing but soy milk and juice, but not in an infant properly fed a healthy vegan diet. If parents don't breastfeed, then there is still soy formula which isn't the same as feeding a baby regular soy milk. It does have all those nutrients that the article talks about babies needing. Very high protein diets increase the acidity of the body which actually depletes the calcium in bones. Obviously young babies still developing their bones need that calcium, but adults who eat a vegan diet are not as much in need of calcium as adults who eat meat because they are not losing it as fast.
