Comedy Carpet

"The Comedy Carpet, a giant concrete and granite tribute to the greatest British comedians, is to be unveiled in Blackpool today by legendary stand-up Ken Dodd.

The 1,880m sq installation is a collage of sketches and jokes celebrating stars from the heyday of music hall to the 21st century, including Morecambe and Wise, Les Dawson and Frankie Howard.
Bruce Forsyth's 'nice to see you - to see you...nice!' and Tommy Cooper's 'just like that' are among a selection of catchphrases also featured on the piece.


Officials in the resort have proudly dubbed the carpet, which stretches across the Tower Festival Headland beneath Blackpool Tower, its 'Angel of the North...but horizontal'. The larger catchphrases can be seen from the summit of the tower.

The carpet consists of 160,000 letters individually cut from black and red granite with blue concrete and took five years to make.
It was designed by British artist Gordon Young and cost £14million."

I doubt anything by Frankie Boyle would be put on there. Blackpool is trying to attract families, not offend them.

I should imagine it would be impossible to stand there and not smile, or even burst out laughing.

All those wonderful quotes, punchlines and one-liners from so many great comedians. Sure, we've heard them all before, but to see them there, immortalised for everybody to enjoy, it would just have to be one of the most uplifting of places to be.

Seems a bit of a waste of money but it's not harming anyone I guess. I like that it's called a carpet though and not something like the walk of fame in Hollywood, definitely feels more British.
