It's a bummer about the less sleep but...longer days Personally I'd rather it be scrapped altogether so it doesn't get dark at 4pm in winter

Whoopee, light nights, longer days means screaming brats, barking dogs chasing oooh skooshy garden hoses, lawnmowers en masse as the neighbours try to keep up with the Jones's, BBQ's wafting greasy fumes over my washing, I will not have greasy knickers, having to shut all the windows to keep the rank smell out of crappy over cooked BBQ'd meat that people munch whilst sitting under crummy striped parasols pretending they are on holiday. No you're not, you're sitting outside eating a sausage, and when I can eventually open the windows to get some air after sweltering in the house, in swarms a sodden wasp. Ah yes, British summertime, lets all prune a bush.

Damn. I didn't know that you guys were that far behind in the "Spring Forward..Fall Backwards" time change.

We had ours last Sunday.

Behind?

We are in a different area of the world so it makes more sense to wait. Last week it was still fairly dark at 7am in the north of Scotland. It's all done for road safety.

Is it really?

I just figured it's one of those things that's always been around.

Well sort of.

Before time was strict people would just get up when the sun came out and because that changes it there was a bit of a natural shift to wake up later in the winter. It wasn't properly made into an official changing of the clocks until the second world war which was done so to maximise the amount of time UK workers could spend in munitions factories.

The reason they kept the time change, after the war, was because they noticed that it still being dark in the winter was leading to more car crashes.

They tested in the seventies having the time an hour ahead in the winter and two hours ahead in the summer (to help with tourism) but there were more road deaths in Scotland because of it.

There are debates going on about going back to that, but with Scotland retaining the current time frame, so England would be an hour ahead of Scotland. Unlikely to ever happen (would be weird if it did) but it's quite interesting.
