Sheherazade, a programmatic symphony and perhaps one of the best ever written.

A little less well known, The Hebrides is an overture by Medelssohn and is another goodie.

And since I'm on a roll, if you listen to nothing else, Vaughan Williams "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" It's in Fantasia, but yea, listen to it because it's AMAZINGLY beautiful.

Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is also incredible, a good close second to Tallis.

I would have also given kudos for vaugh williams' fantasia on a theme by thomas tallis, but TFS wouldnt let me :S

Anyway, I'm all about the romatic - 20th century stuff. stavinsky, debussy, rimsky korsakov, elgar... the list goes on. i love those early 1900's pieces, breaking away somewhat from ideology. That particular era interests me so much.

but yeah, classical music is awesome, and i dont get too many funny looks from it.

I think i get funnier looks from playing the trombone in brass bands, but whatever, i do what i love! :D

I like Brahms, Bruckner, Schubert, Camille Saint-Saens, and Niccolo Paganini. Paganini was Metal before Metal was Metal.

Does anyone here listen to classical music? More specifically, does anyone here MY AGE listen to classical music? I can't tell you the amount of crap I take from my friends and the weird looks I get from some people when I tell them I listen to classical music, but I can't help it. It's just so simple yet so beautiful at the same time. I find it best when I'm studying or reading. Listening to pieces by composers like Fiorenza, Mozart, Tosti, Barthelemy... It's just beautiful. What are you favorite composers?

I like classical piano in particular. Any of the famous composers, but especially Claude Debussy for his later expermental style.

Me too.

Not to be confused with Gary Busey for his later bad acid trip style:

Well... if youre talking about CLASSICAL classical like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven.. no. i rarely go that far back. My classical love is in film scores which seems to cover all emotions of classical from soothing to upbeat!
(John Williams, Danny Elfman, Aaron Zigman, James Horner, Hans Zimmer, etc.)

I like movie scores, but the orchestration is not as complex as late romanticism. It's just not as satisfying to me personally.

i COMPLETELY understand! we all have our different tastes even WITHIN classical which i find really cool! in this case its whatever floats your boat i say. i like the film scores, i think, cause they make me feel a certain way when i listen. if im feeling like i want complexity, i might look into romanticism. right now as we speak im listening to

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op. 101, Movement I

and its very mellow. other days though i might feel like a little excitement and i turn up some GEORGE GERSHWIN lol!

yay I'm glad you like it! Rimsky-Korsakov is an amazing composer, I saw a live performance of the Russian Easter by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic last spring and it literally brought me to tears.

I think classical and romantic music is difficult to capture in a sound recording, to get the real experience you have to be in a concert hall. The percussive sounds of the instruments, like the uptake of the bow and the movement of the orchestra as a unit is part of what makes the music so moving.
