I started well on the giving up front then failed miserably. I've signed up with the NHS stop smoking scheme and my new giving up day is monday. Anybody else who's trying to do the same, keep in touch and good luck!

Tbh, smoking was never a habit for me, all I can say, is to give them up gradually, rather than go cold turkey with them

I smoked for 10 years and then quit back in 2005. It was the hardest thing that I ever did. Good luck!! I used the patch and chewed Altoids and gum.

Also, I signed up for this site: QuitNet and found a large community of people who were quitting. It was a really great support network for me during the hardest times.

I am on my sixth attempt to quit, I have tried just about everything. I think what I'm going to have to do is go somewhere and isolate myself in order to be successful. I think that it is the most insidious addiction known to man.

Woah OK so there's a little widget on that site that you put in like how many cigarettes you smoke a day, how much your cigarettes cost, etc, and it tells you stats.

Here's my current stats:

1313 days, 7 hours, 59 minutes and 30 seconds smoke free.

39400 cigarettes not smoked.

$11,817.00 and 10 months, 23 hours of your life saved.

Your quit date: 8/14/2005 10:30:00 AM

I don't think I could go cold turkey. I need all the help I can get!

Thanks, kyahbean. I'm going to use the gum. I gave up for nine years and the gum deinitely got me through it. Silly of me to start again, but things just got on top of me. Try, try again!

Thank you too, dingle. I'm GOING to do it!!

I'll have a look at quitnet. I think it's better to get support. I know I'll need it.

Yeah, don't start. Quitting was the hardest thing that I ever did. I stand by the fact that I will start again when I'm old and have deteriorating lungs anyway

I quit. But I'm pregnant so that's the right thing really. Once I got over the first 48 hours it was fine. Also knowing now that Jakey is Jakey it makes it a lot easier not to smoke.
