Noticed this on the news today, from the BBC:

A ban on tobacco displays is coming into force in England - with ministers promising it will help curb the number of young people taking up smoking.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17626133

Good thing or a bad thing, will it make a difference or will it just make things annoying for smokers and make them feel demonised? Should they be made to feel demonised or is this an affront to liberal democracy?

Large supermarkets are already doing this. They have sliding doors over the tobacco kiosks. The queue to buy cigarettes is just as long as usual.

It is entirely pointless, a waste of time and money.

If the cigarette stands had adverts glamourising smoking then I could understand it.

All it will do is make visitors from other countries ridicule us (quite rightly) for being so f***ing stupid.

Banning cigarette advertisements didn't curb underage smoking in America. Or, if it did, we had a really huge problem with kids smoking before the ads were banned!

One of the main reasons people start smoking is because people around them smoke, not because they see Wolverine chomping on a cigar (I miss those days ) or because the women in the Virginia Slim ads look so happy.

I don't like the idea of banning advertising, but I can see that there may be a point to it in certain locations.

For instance, not allowing tobacco advertising on billboards outside schools might be a valid restriction. Other restrictions may be reasonable too, and I'd be interested to read what others think might constitutes 'reasonable'.

As usual though, this sort of legislation seems ill thought out and sweeping, rather than selective and targeted.

I find it weird to stop cigarette ads from being in public view because it's so bad for everyone, yet, you'll see a race car go by the camera with Budweiser across the hood in large letters. Beer and fast cars = good idea.

Surprisingly, I'm actually for these kinds of things. I'm a smoker, so I'm kind of against them at the same time, so it balances out to a level indifference.

It's not a bad idea in the long run though. They keep taking this little steps here and there, raising the prices a bit at a time, banning smoking in these few select settings, restricting advertising a little bit more at a time.

They're all small enough steps that they are allowed to pass, and they give those who are smokers only one more inconvenience at a time to adjust to. Little by little they are weaning cigarette smoking from the minds of the public. Eventually it will become a nonissue; people won't even think about cigarettes to start the habit because they simply won't be seen anymore.

And that's really not a bad picture for the future.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. May not make a difference on its own but it all adds up really. Not sure whether it's good to make people feel demonised for smoking though, regardless of the health concerns. The whole idea of weaning someone off of it through measures like this might come across as a bit patronising. But then at the same time if there aren't any direct benefits of it then when weighed next to the health consequences it might seem like a reasonable thing to do.

But personally I'd be thrilled if we could eliminate smoking (or at least if my family could), so making it more difficult for them to smoke is good in my books. I know it won't happen though: people will smoke and drink regardless of what you do to stop them.

Meh. If this slow progress continues eventually it will fade from our culture. People still drank during prohibition because they took one huge step and you just can't expect to change an entire culture that quickly. The anti-smoking programs are smarter; they're taking it in baby steps. People will smoke for a long, long time yet, but the numbers will slowly drop and eventurally it will gently and unperceptably fade from out culture. It will become some vague, foreign concept of the past that most people don't really understand anymore, assuming we're allowed to continue as we are.

Optimistically anyway.

We have family friends who live in Wales, and apparently there are discussions there about banning smoking completely.

I don't think it would be that hard smuggle some in, but still, it seems a little extreme!

I don't know how the smoking rates and smokers' images are there as contrasted to here, but that sounds like a stupid push to me. I don't know why they would try to rush this thing like that; I don't see how such a drastic push would pass into effect even.

I disagree, it can help. IT won't help this generation because they are already smoking and no window/blinds will stop them because they already have a taste for it. But for a younger generation who don't see it and don't have a taste for it, the less they see the less they will seek it out. Change won't happen over night, it'll take years for this kind of thing to work.

The adverts are already banned.

What we are talking about here is not seeing the product at all.

from this

to this

the grey doors slide open and for the shop person to get the product, then they slide them shut and hand it to you.

So f***ing dumb.

If you never socialise with smokers your chances of smoking are very low. However forcing shop keepers to install new shop fittings and making a product taboo and "under the counter" will only add to that feeling of doing something naughty which in itself is a huge buzz for many.

I'd like to see prescription drug advertisements banned in the US.
