I am a new member, my name is Allan.
I have two children aged six & twelve. They both developed a deep chesty cough that just will not budge. We have tried most of the medicines off the shelf at the chemist, we have had them both to see the family doctor who pescribed more medicine. There is always something going around because we live in an area where there are a lot of schools very close together.
We have tried the old wifes remedies - mustard - vick rubs - crystals under the pillow - herbal tea combinations - camomile and various other liquers that the kids just simply refused to drink. We are at our witts end, we haven't had an undisturbed sleep for months. We were wondering if anyone out there has had or knows someone who has suffered this aufull cough.

When I was growing up i suffered from a terrible cough about once a year. Its a little less frequent now but heres what I was given. The Dr prescribed me antibiotics and then gave me cough medicine with codine in it, when i was a little kid, mind you. Always a good thing to give a child narcotic cough medicine. At any rate, this was about the only thing that would allow me to sleep. My mother would also make warm orange juice, and honey to give me after i drank the medicine cause it tasted terrible...whether that helped at all or not, i have no idea. As i have grown older, i still get the same thing, just al ittle less often. the last round with it i had in the middle of summer time and it was the worst it had ever been. Here is what i used - Dr initially prescribed me with Zithromax or three days to get rid of the infection( i had a sinus infection to go along with the cough it was grrreat). this did a small amount to get rid of the sinus pressure but that was about it so i went back and got another three days worth (mind you this medicine stays in your system for about ten days for every three days worth of pills....i was sick for about a month, maybe a little more) along with a precription for Prednisone, a steriod that allowed my airways to open up so i could breathe again...that was probably the largest help to me. I combined this with some benedryl to help me sleep, along with some OTC codine cough medicine and Mucinex, Zicam, Theraflu and Airborne (all otc medicines). I slept alot and started to feel alot better after about two days...three days and i was almost back to normal...it was still about a week before the whole thing was gone but at that point, you name it, i tried it to get rid of my cold.

I also have a friend who has had great success using something called Buckleys...apparently its the WorST tasting thing ever and i havent tried it yet as i havent needed to, but she swears in a day, both her and her husband were feeling incredibly better.

I hope some of that might help! I also use a vaporizer near my bed at night to loosen up the chest...preferably with vicks vaporizer stuff in it....

Thank you so much for the advice. I will try to locate the "Buckleys" but will have to disguise the taste somehow. Merry Christmas from the "BARKING" household.

my son has suffered from coughs/bad chests since he was a baby. we bought an electric vapouriser from boots. it's quite dear(?30) but we've found if we put it on an hour before he goes to bed , and leave it on for a couple of hours it really helps. hope this is some use to you.

You should suspect Asthma and ask your doctor to refer the boys to a chest specialist. This persistant chesty cough is a common symptom of Asthma. The good news is that it is treatable.

try blackberry and elderberry cough syrup. you can find it at any wholefoods market. my neice has had the exact same issues. i just give her some of that stuff and she sleeps like a log. her cough has gone away and now she is a normal 6 year old again.

there is an awesome honey cough syrup called chestol. it works very well too.

Hi, I know this reply is like 2 years late, but if anyone ever has a chesty cough problem, they should try this. Boil one large lemon, until it is soft (approx 5 mins) and then squeeze and clear it, and add to 1/2 cup of honey. Then, get a good chunk of ginger, not too big, and grate it, and then get the juice out of it through a sieve. Mix this up, and it makes a really effective cough syrup. I have a chesty cough atm, and it is helping a lot. I actually had a nice sleep! PS: for all you parents out there, it is nice tasting, and so children should be absolutely fine with it.

Coat your feet in vix vapo rub when you go to bed and put socks on. It sounds odd, n=but trust me it works.

A remedy used in the nighttime Spain a lot is this: You cut an onion in half and place it on a plate close to your bed. The smell of the onion helps moisten the respiratory channels so you don't cough as much. Believe me, i've used it with all my children and i swear by it. Another trick is to put Olbas oil on a tissue close to your head so the smell can reach you while you sleep. And thirdly, a lady from Ecuador i knew used to steep cut garlic and radishes in a little honey for a few hours and then she would take a teaspoon of the liquid every few hours. Hope these help!
