I just happened to wander into one of our local charity shops yesterday and they just happened to have a one-day book sale (3 paperbacks for £1.50). I bought 7 of them which would have cost me just over £60 new but I got them for £4 and they were all 2010 publications. I can't afford new books but why would I bother as I've got several secondhand shops and a damn fine library?

Charity shops are the Best for books!

I know one that is always 4 books for £1, and what they have always changes. But they get LOADS of donations, there are always bags and bags piled up outside.

But even when books are a couple of quid it's a lot cheaper than getting them new. I got a few of my uni books from charity shops.

They ARE the best. You can't beat them for value, specially when you consider how many newly published books they have donated to them. Why should I spend £8-£10 on a new paperback when I can get it for 50p/£1.00? It costs me 65p to reserve one from the library and I prefer to keep them anyway.

Not sticky, but brown stains and crusties - always in a book I'm enjoying and always when I'm reading in bed.
Makes me heave....

Oh yuck!! You've achieved the impossible: how can I ever borrow a library book again?

Wow. The library here inspects each book on return. If you returned a book like that, you would have to buy it

Same here. One of my cats had an 'accident' on a library book and I had to throw it away and pay them for a new one. They are very good at maintaining their books at our library.
