I would like some clarification on the nature of certain physics of death. I understand many of the principles, but sometimes, I am not sure which of them apply.

For example, in Cape Fear (1962), when Max Cady drowns Kersek using a sleeperhold to hold him under the water of the river until he stops moving. Does Kersek die from wet drowning or dry drowning? I have recently read about both, but cannot determine which one is the correct form. Please tell me which one.

There's no way to know without seeing the coroner's report. Do you have that?

It depends on whether he woke up from the stranglehold and sucked in water or not.

If he did not it would be dry. I think.

According to WHO, it depends basically on whether or not his airways closed. You'd have to actually do an autopsy to find that out.

It was a movie. He didn't die.

You need to get a grip on reality.

No, it depends on whether he inhaled water or not. The medical examiner is giving his best guess based on what he sees.

ultimately, for most people, the cause of death is from lack of oxygen to the brain. Possible exceptions might include being vaporized in an atomic explosion but that seldom happens any more.

But until declared dead, you are not officially dead.

Well, let's think about what happened next. Shortly after Max Cady disposes of Kersek and assaults Peggy, Sam goes to the position Kersek was occupying and is unable to find him. He then stumbles upon something in the water and pulls out Kersek's body. His eyes are still open and his mouth is closed. According what I've researched, victims who drown as a result of water inhalation usually have their lips parted and their eyes are glazed.

So, which of the two drownings did he experience, taking all this into account?

It's pretty difficult to perform an autopsy on a character. Duh.

If the lips were parted, and the victim was held/restrained underwater and showed signs of life during the process, then it's a wet drowning? dunno

What prompted this query, just our of curiosity?
