Rep. Mitch Greenlick, from Portland, is sponsoring a bill that makes cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance, meaning it would be illegal to possess or distribute cigarettes without a doctor's prescription.

Under the proposal, offenders would face maximum punishments of one year in prison, a $6,250 fine or both.

Other drugs and substances that are considered Schedule III controlled substances are ketamine, lysergic acid and anabolic steroids.

"The State Board of Pharmacy may adopt rules placing requirements and limitations on the sale or transfer of products containing nicotine," the bill's text says.

I personally don't like cigarettes but that's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. I guess next he'll want to try and reestablish Prohibition to since that worked out so well before.

You can get ketamine on prescription??

I know a lot of students who'd be interested in getting whatever illness gets you that.

The Bill is absurd. Legalize marijuana but put cigarettes in a controlled subsatnce catagory? That bill will never pass.

I think we could "retire" quite a few politicians of all kinds if they were made to undergo a mental evaluation and the results were made public.

O.K.! Now the pharmacists won't only have to fear for their lives holding oxicontin, they'll probably die for cigarettes..

Mental Health evaluations needed immediately.

I doubt it will pass too. Its just another example of the "stupidness" of "save the people from themselves" group think.

Wow, interesting. I can see the failure of this bill to pass being a good reference for the legalization of marijuana. Marijuana has less potential for harm due to not being anywhere close to as addictive as cigarettes (if at all, this point is disputed). For the law to be logically consistent, either marijuana needs to be legal, or cigarettes need to be controlled or illegal. This bill will fail, it's completely unfeasible. But when it does, that fact can be used as a basis for a pro-legalization case for marijuana. We may be watching some interesting politics in action.

I now invision a America full of stoners. I'm sure this will be very productive, we may even invent the worlds first couch that flies to the moon. Fueled with a bag of potato chips of course.

Without having read the article...How could it possibly come under "prescription"? With all the poisons in cigarettes?

Does make a fine insecticide- but really dangerous to handle.
