Before James Dean became the heart-throb that he was, who was the major heart-throb before him?

Someone popular in like the 1920's / 1930's?

Yeah, Cary Grant's another! And if you go a bit further back, Errol Flynn. He's the reason we have the phrase "In like Flynn."

Lol, not the 40's? Silent films dominated the market in the 20's, and even into the 30's. Clark Gable was in his 30's by then.

Frank Sinatra had the teenage attention in the 40's, but of course that was for his singing, as he wasn't acting yet.

There probably wasn't really any actor that can fit the image of "teen idol" until the 50's, as Dean was really the first that teenagers truly could identify with.

Cary Grant was a comedy actor in his earliest roles.

You can continue on... I don't mind the 40's... but I was looking for 30's specific for something I'm working on.

James Dean was the first thing that popped into my mind but when I decided to do some research... found that that he really only gained popularity in the 50's and was pretty much a kid in the 40's.

There also was a young Marlon Brando who was a star slightly before Dean. In fact, he screened for his Rebel Without a Cause role.

James Stewart's first big role was in 1939, but I don't think he was a heartthrob, just a good actor lol.

Greta Garbo was, and still is a lesbian icon

Spookily, the usual Hollywood bombshells don't usually appeal to the lesbian community. Marilyn Monroe isn't that highly regarded, nor are the likes of Jane Russell or Mae West.

You seem to be under the impression that Greta Garbo wasn't a 'usual Hollywood bombshell'...
