I graduated from college in December of last year. I am thinking about going back to school and join a certificate program to hopefully get into a better career field.

I'm a little apprehensive about the idea because it will almost a year since the last time I was in school so I'm worried that my school related skills might be a little rusty. Plus I want to study in a field that is completely different than what I majored in. So I'm worried that I could be stepping in more than I bargained for.

I guess what I'm asking is: those of you who went back to school, how was it the 2nd time around? Was it easier or tougher than what you thought?

I went to college at age 25 and loved every minute of it. I was completely rusty but the support was amazing. I think a big difference is when you are a little older you aren't scared to ask for help amongst your peers or the college staff. I say go for it!

PQ...Go for it! I know you can handle it and it will be easier for you this time since you are a little bit older. Let us know what you decide to do.

Well i'm 6 weeks into taking online courses. My hiatus from school was just around 7 years. It's not too bad I guess. Some rules have changed apparently. I had always done papers in MLA style but now it has to be in this annoyingly difficult APA style.

I'm actually a featured topic!? Wow!

I'm really considering the idea. I told my mom about it this afternoon and she is all over it. She's even offering to help pay for some of my classes which is weird because she didn't directly say that to me the 1st time around.

I'm a little anxious about going back because I have this fear of failing whatever I start. So I'm a little relieved that people aren't thinking I'm a complete nut for having this idea.

Oh, and just so you know, Ace, I had the same feelings about APA when I first started using it. Now it has become 2nd nature to write that way. It's really quite easy once you get the hang of it.

I am in the same boat. Well nearly.

I finished in May, and am looking to start postgrad in September. My issue is that I have been in full time education for nearly 10 years

If I do the post grad, I will have been

To be honest, I would look at it as:

A) do you feel it is necessary to your career?
B) could you get the same experience in a work based manner?
C) do you feel you have the confidence to do well if you don't do it?

Any try to find an answer from there.

If it is a confidence issue, I would advise you to go for the extra learning - you may develop more confidence in your knowledge throughout, which will in turn help you in your interviews and subsequent career.

Best of luck.

I'd do it, personally I'd like to go back to full time education in a few years. I left just before I was 18 and I have to say it was the best thing I ever did because I really didn't enjoy it possibly because I was in a different boat to everyone else there. my life style was more like that of the teachers than the students

But if you can financially manage it, seriously want to do it then do it!
