I was there when the Liverpool fans broke the wall at the "Laundry End" of Walsall F.C.`s ground! It was a "Milk Cup" (League Cup) semi-final 2nd leg, 1st leg 2-2, in 1984. Liverpool`s fans erupted as only they can when Ronnie Whelan added a second goal and the noise at our little ground was deafening, accompanied by an almighty "CRACK" as the wall broke in one piece from corner to corner! This being pre-all-seater stadia, of course.
There was not the hint of trouble, after the Reds` fans had tumbled and fell on to the pitch, the only concern for all the 19,000 people there that night was that no-one had been killed or seriously injured, of course. Thankfully, that was the case. Those Reds fans had created a fantastic atmosphere there that night already, and they had been really sporting to Walsall`s players in the first leg, where we pulled off that 2-2 draw, clapping them when the players approached the Kop after the final whistle.
