My subscription ran out a little while ago.

I didnt like the one that I was using so I have decided to change, but what do I go for?!?! I'm very confused.

A lot of people say that AVG Free is good but I've also heard that it slows your computer down. I'm also a little suspicious of a product that's free - maybe it's not as good?

I was told that Avast! was good but its a bit expensive.

Apparently Norton and McAfee are crap and I've looked at NOD32 and Kaspersky and they are both quite expensive too.

But the main thing is... when people say their anti virus is "good" why do they say that?

So what is good and why?

AVG is free and is great. I recommend it. I've used it on pc running no faster than 900Mhz and it works fine.

well im using AVG now, and yes it is very good, IMO the best free antivirus you can get.

its simple to use and effective, i haven't had any virus's since using it
i have no real complaints except for the scheduled updates, but there necessary and all antivirus's do the same anyway.

i would also suggest getting zone alarm, its a firewall program which is also free.

Thanks people for your help.

I just had Avast but the free subscription ran out. I was going to buy it but then I saw the price.

AVG is very good. I prefer BitDefender and Avira these days, but AVG is very good.

Avast has an excellent, free home edition.

So why do you prefer them?

I prefer BitDefender because it doesn't include an on-access scanner. It just does scheduled system scans and is very unintrusive.

I also prefer Avira over AVG because of its superior scanning engine.

heres a tip for looking for free software.

go to download.com
find the software type you're looking for, narrow the search by choosing free and then narrow the search again by sorting the results by "editors rating"

this is what it look likes for the antivirus type program search.
link

as you can see the top results are all programs mentioned in this thread. (with the exception of bitdefender)

I meant to say "Avira over AVG because of its superior scan engine."
