yes, anyone can run, but not everyone can become part of the media circus that indefinitely ends in the election of a president.

in fact,no not anyone can win. has anyone ever won without the blessing of one of the four major parties? NO

The parties don't tell the media who to cover

People don't win because they've gotten the "blessing" of one of the major parties.

Anyone who wants to win will file to run in the primaries under one of the two major parties. The American citizens who vote in the primaries determine which one of the people who decided to run under their party name will be that party's nominee.

The actual party has very, very little to do with the process. They essentially put the rubber stamp on the candidate decided by the American citizens.

The numbers are among people eligible to vote, registered or not. In 2004, about 57% of Americans old enough to vote did so.

Compulsory voting isn't that great, by the way. People who are ignorant and apathetic are generally better off not voting.

I am sure that it said registered voters but then I could easily be wrong.

Compulsory voting pros and cons is a topic in itself.

Do the math yourself.

US population in 2004 was about 290 million. 24.6% of the population is under 18, giving us about 213 million people of voting age.

122 million people voted in the 2004 Presidential election.

122 / 213 = 57.27%
